Silas Devaney’s only pass attempt of the night proved to be the go-ahead score in the fourth quarter, a 34-yard toss to Cale Cummings, that allowed the 12th-ranked Class A Blackhawks to upset top-ranked and two-time defending Class 2A state champion Stars.
Cameron Hovey’s two-point conversion run proved decisive when Western Boone’s Robby Taylor scored on a 1-yard run to pull within a point. The Stars went for the win with a two-point try but Sheridan stuffed the run to hold on to victory.
Hovey had touchdown runs of 1 and 4 yards to help Sheridan lead 13-7 after three quarters. Hovey picked up 107 yards on 17 carries. Peyton Cross picked up 47 yards on 10 rushes for the Blackhawks.
Sheridan’s scheduled Friday game at Clinton Central was postponed Sunday.
