World-wide, two pillar themes for Rotarians revolve around youth and education. What better way to combine those pillars than to hold an annual speech contest for local youth? This year, as it has for multiple years past, the Sheridan Rotary Club reached out to Sheridan High School’s speech teacher Mrs. Becky Pitzer for assistance.
As she always does, Mrs. Pitzer came up with two interested students to participate in the contest. Unfortunately, one of the students dropped out at the last moment because of an illness but the contest still went on as scheduled.
Sheridan High senior Nolan Miller, proudly accompanied by his parents and Mrs. Pitzer, as well as new SCS Superintendent Mary Robeson, came to last Tuesday’s meeting and gave his seven-minute speech. He walked away with first-place honors and is $100 richer for his efforts. Nolan is now eligible to move on to Rotary District 6560 competition against winners from other regional clubs and a chance to win $1,000.
Sheridan Rotary is proud to serve the community through a variety of events and activities that both benefit and improve the local community. The club meets in formal session on the first and third Tuesdays of each month with a dinner meal and guest program in the Community Room of the Sheridan Public Library. Meetings begin at 6:15 p.m. and programs begin at 7:45 p.m.
If you are interested in attending a meeting or would like to know more about Rotary, contact any member or come by the new Sheridan Historical Society (315 S. Main Street) any Tuesday or Friday afternoon and ask for Rotarian Steve Martin. Won’t you join us?
