Fred "Tater" Jones, 92, Sheridan; went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Jan. 4, 2021 surrounded by his loving family.
He was born Nov. 2, 1928 to the late Clayton and Phobe Adeline (Whitcomb) Jones in Scircleville, Ind.
He was a graduate of Sugar Creek High School in Pickard, Ind. Mr. Jones met the love of his life in high school and married his high school sweetheart Phyllis (Mathews) Jones on July 11, 1948 and they had 60-plus wonderful years together. Mr. and Mrs. Jones loved to dance; they competed in square and round dance. The couple competed in the Nationals Square and Round competition in Seattle, Washington and Las Vegas, Nev. Mrs. Jones would make their dance clothing, usually from a picture, so that they would match.
Mr. Jones loved being a farmer, but another joy started at 16 years old. That was flying small aircraft. Owning a few planes over the years, he would go flying whenever he could and shared his love of flying with his family and friends. He enjoyed flying for more than 50 years.
Mr. Jones was a proud veteran who honorably served his country in the United States Army in an artillery division. Through his leadership and hard work, he earned the rank of 1st Lieutenant. Lt. Jones was discharged from the U.S. Army in May of 1961.
When he returned home, he started Jones Electric Service. He took great pride in serving his clients and building a reputable, successful business through hard work. Mr. Jones taught the value of hard work to his children; he was proud that his son Brian followed in his footsteps, taking over the family business. Mr. Jones continued to work, retiring at 90 years old.
His memberships included Hills Baptist Church and he shared that faith with his family and friends.
Survivors include children Brenda (Jim) Garrod of Sheridan and Brian (Angela) Jones of Sheridan; grandchildren Jennifer (Tyler) Arnold, Kaitlin (Garrett) Schlobohm, Lauren (Landon) Edsall, Kayla (Brent) Dunham, Melanie (Jacob) Harden, Evan (Erica) Mosson and Neil Jones; great-grandchildren Charlotte and Sadie Arnold, Graysie and Maverick Dunham, Emerie and Kaycie Harden, Braxton Mosson and Charlee Jones; and two sisters, Mildred Coy of Frankfort and Joan (Ken) Butler of Florida.
