Mary Evelyn Calvert, 84, of Sheridan (Terhune), passed away on Saturday morning, April 4, 2020 at Brookdale Senior Living in Carmel.
Born in Lebanon on Oct. 12, 1935, she was the daughter of the late Henry Clifford and Florence Mable (Demaree) Johns.
On Aug. 28, 1953, she married the love of her life, Doran Clay Calvert.
Mrs. Calvert was a member of Terhune United Methodist Church for more than 65 years, and a member of Ellenton United Methodist Church in Florida for more than 10 years. She was a church pianist, Sunday school teacher, and vacation bible school teacher at Terhune UMC; she also was a member of the church choir, and a member of the Jamboree Quartet at Ellenton UMC.
Mr. and Mrs. Calvert owned the old general store in Terhune under the proprietary name of Johns & Calvert. They purchased the business from Mrs. Calvert's late parents Hank & Florence Johns in the early 1970s, at which time Mrs. Calvert assumed responsibility of business management. Her parents had owned and operated the general store since the late 1920s. The store closed in 1999, when Mr. and Mrs. Calvert retired.
Mrs. Calvert loved playing the piano and organ and singing. She was a former member of Sweet Adeline’s. She was also a member of Boone County Home Economics and Job’s Daughters. She is a graduate of Sheridan High School class of 1953. She enjoyed sewing and was an extremely accomplished seamstress, often found shopping for patterns or sewing clothes for each and every family member. When she wasn’t sewing or busy cooking family meals, washing clothes, or cleaning house, you might find her in the kitchen giving family haircuts. Gardening was another one of her passions, and the fruits of her labor through canning and freezing were enjoyed by both family and friends. Crossword puzzles and reading novels were her getaway when it was time to relax. Once a month, since graduating high school, she enjoyed hosting or attending card club with her closest high school friends (Jim & Sue Mossburg, Don & Alice Lecklitner, and/or Jim & Ilene Mossburg) for an evening of euchre . . . and lots of fun, food, and laughter. She was an extremely hard working and busy woman. Most of all, Mary was a loving and dedicated wife, wonderful mother, and grateful grandmother and great grandmother dedicated in love and service to her family. Above all else, she was a kind and gentle soul who dedicated her life to God; poured her heart into parenting her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren; and served her community to the best of her ability every chance she had.
Survivors include her husband of 66 years, Doran Calvert; two sons, Gary Neil and David Bruce Calvert; a daughter, Susan Diane (Randy) Rawlings; brothers Donald and Robert Johns; bonus sister and brother, Myrna Demaree Rodriguez and Ronald Demaree; grandchildren Raina (Jason) Cox, Danielle Calvert, Andrew (Ashley) Calvert, Jeffrey (Brittany) Rawlings, Jennifer (Joe) Godar and Dawson Calvert; and great-grandchildren Rionna Cox, Jada Cox, Sophia Cox, Cole Rawlings, Hallee Rawlings, Lettie Rawlings, Evelyn Godar, Avery Calvert and Amelia Calvert.
She was preceded in death by her parents Henry and Florence Johns and bonus brother Jack Demaree.
A private family graveside service will be held at Crown View Cemetery in Sheridan. A celebration of life will be planned for a later date.
